- ✅ 什麼是 referral(介紹人)?
- ✅ 什麼是 agent(業務員)?
1️⃣ 什麼是 Referral(介紹人)?
Referral(介紹人),多數情況下是「不能賣保險」的人。
2️⃣ 什麼是 Agent(業務員)?
Agent(保險業務員),在美國是被州政府監管的職業。
Agent
Agent?
Agent?
Referral
Agent
Referral vs agent,
🤝 Referral vs Agent: Who’s Helping You — and Who’s Selling to You?
For many new immigrants, parents, and international students in the U.S., the first time they deal with insurance, they often face the same confusion:
“Is this person simply introducing something to me, or trying to sell me insurance?”
Some people say they’re “just helping you connect.”
Some bring brochures, QR codes, or ask for your SSN, ID photos, or even payment on the spot.
With language and cultural differences, it’s easy to mix up:
- Who is simply introducing a platform?
- Who is a licensed agent?
- Who is your friend — and who is also a salesperson? 🤯
This article is not legal advice.
It’s simply written from the perspective of someone who has lived in the U.S. for years, passed multiple insurance licenses, and really dislikes high-pressure sales.
Let’s talk about:
- ✅ What is a referral?
- ✅ What is an agent?
- ✅ What should you expect from each role?
- ✅ How can new immigrants protect themselves from being misled?
1️⃣ What Is a Referral? Most of the Time, They Cannot Sell
Here’s the key point:
A referral person is usually someone who cannot sell insurance.
A referral typically:
- Shares: “Hey, I know a platform/agent you can check out.”
- Sends you a QR code or link
- May receive a small fixed referral bonus (not commission), depending on the platform
But normally, a referral:
- ❌ Does NOT have an insurance license
- ❌ Does NOT provide suitability analysis
- ❌ Should NOT be explaining policy details
- ❌ Should NOT be pushing you to “sign today”
You can think of a referral as:
“Someone who shares information,” not “someone who makes decisions for you.”
2️⃣ What Is an Agent? A Licensed Professional With Responsibilities
An agent in the U.S. is a regulated profession.
A legitimate agent usually has:
- ✅ Passed the state licensing exam (e.g., CA L&H / P&C)
- ✅ An active license (searchable on the state DOI website)
- ✅ Required ongoing training (CE courses)
- ✅ Compliance obligations — no exaggerated promises
A good, ethical agent should:
- 👉 Ask about your situation before recommending anything
- 👉 Explain multiple options, not just push one product
- 👉 Give you time to think, not pressure you to sign immediately
In short:
An agent is someone who can legally sell — and must take responsibility for what they say.
3️⃣ Why Do New Immigrants Often Confuse Referrals and Agents?
In many immigrant communities, you often see:
- Friends recommending friends: “This person helps people buy insurance.”
- QR codes shared in Line / WeChat groups
- People calling themselves “consultants” without showing any license
And for new immigrants:
- They trust familiar languages and familiar faces
- They’re afraid of dealing with English-speaking staff
- They don’t want to ask too many questions for fear of being “troublesome”
The result?
- A referral may sound like an agent
- Some people unintentionally cross compliance boundaries
You can trust friends — but you should still know who is sharing, and who is responsible.
4️⃣ How to Tell Whether You’re Talking to a Referral or an Agent
You don’t need to be an expert.
Just ask a few simple, polite questions:
- “Are you a licensed insurance agent, or a referral who introduces the platform?”
- “Which state is your license in? May I see it?”
- “Is there a link where I can verify your license?”
If the person is a referral, they should honestly say:
- “I’m just a referral. You’ll talk to an actual agent later.”
If the person is an agent, they should have no problem showing their license or DOI link.
If someone becomes upset or defensive when you ask, that’s a red flag. 🚨
5️⃣ What Referrals Can Do vs. What Agents Should Do
Referral — Appropriate Responsibilities
- Share which platform or agent they used
- Provide links or group invitations
- Tell you: “You can check this out.”
Agent — Professional Responsibilities
- Understand your income, budget, family situation
- Explain multiple options with pros and cons
- Point out risks and limitations
- Give you time to think and discuss with your family
If someone without a license is explaining policy features or urging you to sign quickly?
That is not allowed — and you should walk away.
6️⃣ How New Immigrants Can Protect Themselves
- 📝 Don’t sign anything immediately — take it home to review
- 🪪 Don’t send SSN or ID photos to strangers
- 📄 Ask for official documents (policy summary, illustration)
- ⏳ Ask about cancellation or “free look” period
- 🙅♀️ If something feels wrong, it probably is — step back
Insurance is long-term.
No legitimate agent should pressure you to decide on the spot.
7️⃣ A Small Note: Where Do I Stand?
You might wonder:
“So what about you? Are you a referral or an agent?”
To be transparent:
- I hold U.S. insurance licenses (L&H / P&C)
- I’ve seen many new immigrants struggle with unclear information
- This website exists to help you understand first, decide later
Sometimes I may simply be a referral — helping you find the right platform.
Sometimes I may be the agent — if your situation truly fits.
My priority is clarity, not pressure.
💚 Final Thoughts: Understand the Role Before You Decide
Referral vs agent — two simple words, but completely different roles:
- Referral: a bridge that connects you
- Agent: a licensed professional who must be responsible
You have the right to:
- Ask who you’re talking to
- Take your time before signing anything
- Say “I need time to think,” without guilt
You buy insurance not for the agent, and not for the referral —
you buy it for your family and your future.
